Author Guidelines

Established in 1994, PREP Publishing is the publishing division of PREP Inc., a company founded in 1981. PREP Publishing is a diversified publishing, editing, and professional writing organization. PREP has published mysteries, true-crime, romance, creative non-fiction and biographies, self-help and how-to books, and numerous career titles. PREP's mission is"to publish quality materials that enrich people's lives."

Fiction Titles

The company's first title, Second Time Around, is a mystery/romance novel by Southern writer, Patty Sleem. Her second novel, Back In Time, was described by Library Journal as, "an engrossing look at the discrimination faced by female ministers." Second Time Around has be published in Chinese, and Back In Time has been published in large print by Simon & Schuster's Thorndike Press. PREP's Judeo-Christian Ethics Series includes Gordon Beld's A Gentle Breeze From Gossamer Wings, a novel about refugees from the Pol Pot era which received lead reviews, and Bible Stories From the Old Testament by Katherine Whaley.

Career Titles

PREP Publishing is best known for its line of career titles. The Real-Resumes Series, edited by Anne McKinney, is a series of books showing resumes and cover letters targeted toward specific career fields such as nursing, law enforcement, non-profit, construction, manufacturing, engineering, medical, computer, sports, supply and logistics, legal, human resources, aviation and travel, teaching, and many others. PREP also publishes the Business Success Series and the Government Jobs Series. Library Journal praised PREP's career titles as "essential to library collections."

The Reader's Report

PREP's popular Reader's Report Service is a comprehensive critique of an author's manuscript. PREP employs outside readers to evaluate the book's suitability for publication and write a Reader's Report. In the case of fiction, the service provides an objective review in which professional readers key in on critical literary elements vital to a well-written story including plot, characterization, diction, and detail. The Reader's Report is sent to the author so that the author can make the necessary changes to refine the manuscript. PREP's expert readers and editors review a wide range of genres including literary, nonfiction, creative non-fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, romance, contemporary, and experimental. We also accept collections of short stories. At this time we are not reviewing erotica.

To make a submission to PREP, mail your complete manuscript with a non-refundable reading fee of $350 payable to PREP Publishing. Please send a hard copy only (no electronic submissions) along with a payment of either check or money order and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) if you wish to have your manuscript returned. If you prefer, you can pay online through our secure payment system and then mail us your manuscript with SASE. Please put page numbers on your manuscript. Turnaround time is about 3-5 weeks. Please feel free to contact our submissions department. Address submissions to:

Reader's Report Service.   This service has been widely praised by published and pre-published authors. In addition to helping PREP identify books for possible publication by PREP, the Reader's Report also helps writers who aspire to have their book published by a major publisher or who wish to catch the eye of literary agents who can aid in identifying suitable publishers. Authors who use the Reader's Report Service are never under any obligation to publish their book with PREP Publishing. The Reader's Report helps authors address and "fix" problems with plot, characterization, diction, pacing, and many other elements so that the writer can produce a more refined and commercially viable manuscript. A well-written and clean manuscript is crucial for writers to be noticed and accepted by publishers and literary agents. Following are comments from writers who have used the service:

Floyd T., author:

“Back in 1998, I used your Reader's Report service and was pleased with the results. Your report regarding my novel, now published, was greatly appreciated and very helpful. I'm enclosing a draft copy of my latest novel which will be a sequel. Thank you for your past service.”

Ruth R., Nova Scotia:

“I want to thank you for your intelligent, impartial, and encouraging words. They inspire a re-writing.”

Sherban Y., Towson, MD:

“Thank you for your helpful suggestions, all of which I will incorporate into the manuscript. You obviously gave my work a careful reading, picking up on grammar and plot details I missed. Yours is the first truly objective review of my work, and your praise comes at a time when I was beginning to become discouraged with the publishing process. The report you wrote for me should definitely help to get my work noticed.”

Steven B., Clallam Bay, WA:

“I've forwarded a copy of your Reader's Report to a few literary agents. I wanted to let you know that a few may contact you as a result. Thank you for being a part of my work.”

Line Editing/Proofreading Service.   This service is a more extensive service than the Reader's Report. The Line Editing/Proofreading Service is a line-by-line editing and proofreading of your manuscript. Comments are handwritten on the actual manuscript. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors will be corrected; errors in syntax and awkward sentences will be identified and suggestions for correction will be made. This service is a useful tool for a writer who wants a professional and experienced editor to look over the work and refine it. Sometimes authors decide to utilize both the Reader's Report Service and the Line Editing/Proofreading Service. A SASE with sufficient postage for the manuscripts return is required. Please send your manuscript double-spaced if you wish to use the line editing service.
